PROGRAMS & INITIATIVES
We believe in meeting people where they are, ensuring that literacy is accessible to all learning styles, reading levels, and backgrounds. Through storytelling, interactive literary experiences, and community-centered reading programs, we transform reading into something dynamic and personal.
Our programs focus on:
-
Storytelling and literacy engagement, including read-alouds and creative literacy events.
-
Culturally rooted book experiences that affirm identity and representation.
-
Community and family literacy initiatives that encourage reading as a shared experience.
-
Each of these programs is designed to ensure that reading is not only accessible but also joyful, meaningful, and deeply connected to the lived experiences of our communities.
1
Say It Loud: Stories That Speak & Art That Shines
A bi-monthly family read-aloud and art program held at 1000 Words Art Gallery, designed to
inspire youth and families through the joy of storytelling and creative expression. Each session
features captivating stories read by teen volunteers or guest authors, followed by a hands-on art
activity led by a professional artist. Healthy snacks will create a welcoming and nurturing
environment for all attendees.
2
The Storytime Hotline
a free, 24/7 800-number that allows youth and families to access
engaging stories read by authors, teen volunteers, and community members. Designed to foster
a love of reading for youth at all reading levels and abilities, the hotline introduces listeners to
diverse books and authors. Stories are updated weekly to keep the content fresh, exciting, and
impactful. To further spark engagement, a copy of each featured book is given away through
social media promotions, building excitement and interest in both the books and the hotline.
3
RESONATE
reimagines the traditional book club by creating a relaxed, communal space that
gives readers of all levels and abilities the opportunity to share literature that resonates. This
program blends quiet individual reading time with space to share powerful quotes, passages,
and ideas inspired by personal reading. Each event cultivates authentic connections, builds
community, and increases literary knowledge. It is reminiscent of testimony service within the
black church and the knowledge-sharing spaces of Black Literary Societies of the 19th century.
